Visible Monday - Too darn hot for woman or beast

When we got ready to take the pictures for today's Visible Monday and  Monday Mingle post, Harry got wild, wild, wild when he heard the camera. He was running back and forth down the hall, shaking his big teddy bear from side to side. We had to get out of the way or be mowed down. He was so excited to hear the camera. We got several photos of him, but most of them were blurry because he was moving so darn fast. We had to take them inside as it was so horribly hot outside. Most of our days have been over 100 degrees F and it is miserable to be outside for any amount of time.

My outfit for today is a simple one that I wore on Sunday for breakfast out with my husband and then doing laundry the rest of the afternoon. I purchased the maxi dress at the 1/2 of 1/2 price store and the denim shirt was a consignment store purchase. (If it hadn't been so hot, I would've worn a white jacket with it.) The dress has silver and black cord trim and also plastic shiny jewels. I kept my accessories to a minimum because the dress is pretty blingy.
Mr Harry with his tongue hanging out after his morning exercise.
I have certainly embraced the maxi dress this summer. I didn't care for them much last year. I probably wouldn't have purchased any this summer if not for the excellent prices I have gotten at the 1/2 of 1/2 store. I have a lot of fun looking through the racks there and finding bargains. This past week I got a Lane Bryant linen jacket for $2.99. It was missing a belt, but my first thought was to use a scarf as a belt and I think it will be a more stylish outfit than if it had the belt.

Do any of you watch Longmire on A&E? It is my summer favorite TV show
and is based on books by Craig Johnson. As I was writing this post, I was reminded of a character in the books and on the show, Henry Standing Bear, who speaks without using contractions. I have to force myself to write more casually and use contractions. I think that is because I spent so many years writing technical documents. Do any of you have to edit your writing to make it  sound more conversational and less formal? Probably not, because so many of you are such gifted writers.

  1. I love denim with dresses and skirts these days.
Ick to summer heat. I am so over it and we haven't had it nearly as badly as you all have.

I have always been one to write like I speak - but without all the "uhs" - maybe to a fault. I think I could be a little more formal in my writing sometimes.
I do not know a thing about "Longmire". I will have to google it and find out more. I am always looking for something quality to watch on tv. Easier said than done!

  2. I like the maxi with overshirt combo. It looks nice and cool. It's been ridiculously hot here too. Sounds like Harry does what our kitties do - we call it "ripping and roaring" because they run around like crazy things until they crash out.

I usually type how I think. Sometimes it's very conversational, sometimes I use words that don't work in the right order or are less atypical in standard speech. It depends what I've been reading or watching and how manic my brain is running.

  3. I love the pretty detail on this dress! I don't have cable so I don't watch much of anything. haha Hope you are well. Kiah

  4. I love maxi dresses and skirts - it's taken a while for them to be acceptable now, I think. I know I felt odd wearing a maxi skirt a year or two years ago, but now I can't remember what I wore instead!

You look lovely, and Mr. Harry is so handsome!

  5. Well, you certainly clean up nicely before you do the laundry. haha I love a great black dress. It can be dressy or casual and I love it with denim.
    Mr Harry cracks me up!

  6. Fantastic bling on that dress! This maxi looks perfect for hot weather. And I like how you've paired it with the denim shirt. Funny what you said about contractions... It's a challenge for me to find that middle voice sometimes - I tend to slip into character voices depending on my mood. Then I fear that a casual tone in text may have caused offence if I read it back later. Or sound too bossy. Or sound too trite... I like your writing!!

  7. Like your maxi, like your writing. I am deeply critical of what I call fake or stilted writing. Some of the stuff out there is simply incomprehensible. You have a natural voice, and you write from the heart -- and that to me is good writing!

  8. I had a client who wouldn't take any technical documents with contractions. Grrrr. When you're telling someone how to do something why can't you be conversational? I like to think of it as one friend helping another.

I think we've habituated children and pets to cameras. When I was at a son's graduation I got my camera out and the baby girl in the row in front of me went ape smiling and posing. Oh what have we done!

Hoping for a cool spell for you.

  10. Harry loves the camera! How funny and adorable. My cats will sometimes get "bitten by a flea" and run around crazily, then flop down hard, like Megan's kittens. But they don't have a teddy bear in their mouths (extra points for cute).

I really like your embellished dress - very flattering and perfect for the heat. Thanks so much for linking up, Debbi, and have a wonderful day.

  12. Your dress is so great, I love the "jewels"! Had I only known earlier how comfortable these maxi dresses can be...! Harry is so cute, and much more photogenic than my dog!

  13. I've gone all in on maxis this season. They always read as a bit too formal to me before, but either I've lightened up, or they're making them more casual-attire-friendly these days. I like the embellished neckline on yours!

  14. You know how much I love maxi's. This one looks great on you. Our days in the midwest have been much hotter than usual. If I'm not near water I'm inside and that makes me sad.
As far as writing goes that is one gift that was gone when it was my turn in line. Actually that's one of the reasons I started blogging...........fear of writing and fear of photo's.
Try to stay cool, think I'll wear a maxi tomorrow. After all it's only going to be 100!!!

  15. I am with you on hte heat-it's been miserable here, too.
LOVE the outfit!!! Maxi's have been my go-to in this summer heat.
I was resistent to them last year, too. Now it's like wearing pjh's!!!
That maxi will look great come cooler weather with boots and a long sleeve jackeet!

  16. The black maxi with bling looks chic and comfortable at the same time. This hot weather is crazy! Our temperatures are similar to yours and no sign of rain in sight. I'm always editing, so you are not alone.

  17. I love Longmire! I should have known you'd like it too, since we like so many of the same books. Harry is so cute! Your description of his love of the camera is great. Between you and Tamera @ menopauselsupermodel, I am getting converted to Maxi-dresses. I wore them as a teenager, and just hadn't considered wearing them again until now. You look really nice in that look.

  18. uh-oh, you make me want to sneak back to 1/2 of 1/2 and now they are tempting me with coupons all the time! The story about Harry is so very funny--the connections our animals make! I hear we may get some rain come Thursday or so.

  19. Your maxi is great! The trim looks like an elaborate necklace. I just started wearing maxis this year too. I don't know what took me so long!
Like you, I edit my writing too...even days after I've postted!

  22. ah, i love black with denim and especially in summer! i think it's a great background for all types of accessories, the bling on yours looks great and frames your face nicely.

"This past week I got a Lane Bryant linen jacket for $2.99. It was missing a belt, but my first thought was to use a scarf as a belt and I think it will be a more stylish outfit than if it had the belt." hmm. between this comment and your observation about buying more maxi dresses because of the price and availability, you've got me thinking about how much of our wardrobes come down to these type of random factors - what's in the stores, what's at a good price, and so on. I like a certain amount of that in clothing, it makes it feel less rigid and more whimsical.

oh lord, i just edit and try not to write endless amounts! and you can see how well THAT works.... ;) Happy Weekend! steph

  23. Great dress! maxis rule :-)

I often go back and contract after the first draft. I don't notice it until I re-read it. In a way, I don't think it matters, though. I think folks get the point irregardless.

    Stay cool!!!
