Visible Monday - Fall plaid colors & a bit more advice from 1963

It's Visible Monday #14 and I am joining Patti @ Not Dead Yet Style again this week. I really wanted to be a part of Tammy@Silverstyle's Trending through the decades - Polka dots group, but I discovered that Wichita is not a polka dot type of town.  Today I am featuring a fall plaid jacket that I love. It didn't photograph well since it is a very small lined plaid (you would think I would've learned my lesson from the stripe shirt fiasco) but I do love it so much!

My photographer said something that really tickled me. I couldn't stop laughing.
Jacket: Mossimo - Target
Top: Chico;s
Jeggings JMS (my favorite inexpensive jeans)
Shoes: Pencey Leopard Booties
I was laughing so hard that Harry decided he needed to check what was going on.
Necklace:
Chico's
In 1963, many women did not work outside the home. I know my Mother had a job just keeping up with the house. She took care of pretty much everything around the house including yard care and always had dinner on the table for us every day. The McCall's Sewing Book had this to say about the "Wardrobe Needs" of the Homemaker.

"A homemaker often makes the mistake of thinking she does not have to look her best when doing her daily chores. Actually, ill-fitting clothes lower her morale and make her less able to cope with every day trials. That doesn't mean she has to dress up, but it does mean she should look neat and trim. If you look well and feel comfortable in slacks or shorts, wear them when working in the home. But be sure you look well in them and that they fit properly. A simple shirtwaist dress or wrap-around with flared or pleated skirt will present a much more attractive appearance and be just as comfortable as pants.  For evenings at home a simple dress is always in good taste. But dress up a bit if you wish. It adds a touch of gaiety and elegance to a family gathering."
Whoa! Have times changed! For those of you old enough to remember the "Leave it to Beaver" show, June Cleaver was the epitome of the above quotation; always immaculate in a pretty dress and pearls. Our society has certainly become much more casual in the way we dress, at least in my part of the world.  I don't think that wearing a dress will automatically make you less able to cope with every day trials as suggested above. Unless of course, you are rich enough to afford help for the household chores like cleaning floors and toilets, in which case I guess a dress would work well. Do you wear nice clothing to clean your house?

  2. A smile is your best accessory!

I sometimes read the "Fly Lady" web site. She's got a program for keeping your house clean. Her rule is "tie-up" shoes. If you've got shoes tied onto your feet it's hard to sit down, kick your shoes off and quit cleaning.

  3. I am smiling at Rose's comment! You have a great laughing-face, Debbi : > And I love your look.

No, I don't dress nicely to clean the house. I wear nearly unmentionable tee shirts and shorts, and put my hair in a bun. Do you remember the 1960's Pledge furniture polish commercials, where the woman danced around in her heels, dusting the woodwork? : >

  5. @RoseAG Thank you for such a nice compliment. It has only been recently that I would even smile in a picture. I did not have braces when I was young, so my teeth have never been something I liked for people to see. Finally, I realized that a smile is about much more than whether or not you have straight teeth.

  9. I agree with the others, you look so happy and full of joy. It made me smile to see! I love your jacket and necklace. Also red and tan have recently become a favorite pairing for me.

I think even if I'm just around the house, I still try to put on "real clothes". It does affect my morale staying in pajamas (or "lazy clothes") day after day. I wouldn't wear my Sunday Best to clean the house, but a simple jersey dress or tunic with leggings would be comfortable options.

  10. I have special house cleaning capris and tanks. They are especially nice clothes, but at least they match. I remember my mother wearing a dress all the time, even when dusting and vacuuming!

  14. Love that jacket and your shoes are super cute! Are you losing weight? How are your headaches? Sorry, I am sounding like the mom I am now! haha I would love to dress up everyday but I dress according to my mood and there are days when I just want to lounge around the house in a long t-shirt and socks! I clean up in leggings, long tees and some sort of headband or scarf because I sweat like crazy when I clean. lol I could not imagine cleaning in a dress with pearls on. haha Kiah

  17. "Do you wear nice clothing to clean your house?"

Yeah, I do. Though I define nice as clean and comfy clothes, but not so stylish that I can't even concentrate on my household task because I'm looking unto myself in the mirror the whole time.haha. btw, love that jacket and the red top, as well as the leopard print shoes. Lovely!

    Cheers,
